Why AZ-700 Certification Is Essential for Azure Network Engineers

One of the most sought-after and poorly understood IT skill sets today is cloud networking. With only a few clicks, anyone can create a virtual network in Azure, but creating one that is safe, robust, and scalable is a whole other story. Microsoft’s AZ-700 certification was designed to bridge that gap, and it has swiftly emerged as the distinction between those who can configure Azure networking and those who can genuinely architect it.

What Is AZ-700?

The test used to get the Microsoft Certified: Azure Network Engineer Associate credential is called AZ-700, or Designing and Implementing Microsoft Azure Networking Solutions. It is designed for experts who design, build, and manage Azure networking infrastructure, including load balancing, routing, network security, virtual networks, and hybrid connection.

According to Microsoft, an Azure network engineer’s duties include proactively monitoring environments to identify problems early, fixing connectivity issues as they arise, and optimizing the speed, reliability, scale, and security of Azure networking solutions. The purpose of AZ-700 is to confirm that you are capable of doing all of things, not just discussing it. 

What Does the Exam Cover?

The two biggest domains on the AZ-700 are given the most weight out of a number of fundamental emphasis areas:

  • Creating and putting into practice fundamental networking infrastructure, including as virtual networks, subnetting, IP addressing, and services like Azure Bastion, private endpoints, and virtual network gateways.
  • VPNs, ExpressRoute, including ExpressRoute Global Reach and FastPath, and hybrid connectivity are all included in the design, implementation, and management of connectivity services.
  • Creating and executing front door, private link, and application gateway services for safe, effective app delivery.
  • Creating and putting into practice DDoS protection, Azure Firewall, Network Security Groups (NSGs), and Application Security Groups. 

The test lasts 100 minutes and usually consists of 40–60 questions with a score between 100 and 1000. It’s difficult because Microsoft places a lot of weight on whether you’re adhering to approved best practices for developing and protecting real-world Azure networks rather than merely knowing what a feature does. This isn’t because the concepts are difficult. 

Why It’s Essential, Not Optional

These days, cloud networking is essential infrastructure rather than a luxury. The network layer is becoming the backbone that connects everything as more businesses shift important workloads to Azure; its proper operation is essential for computing, storage, identity, and security. AZ-700 indicates that you have a thorough, practical understanding of that backbone.

It certifies abilities that companies find difficult to evaluate in other ways. Cloud networking errors are often undetectable until they result in outages or security problems. Employers have a tangible means to confirm competence before it becomes a production issue with a certification that explicitly examines hybrid connectivity, routing, and security architecture. 

It immediately builds upon actual Azure administration expertise. Microsoft advises applicants to be familiar with fundamental ideas including IP addressing, DNS, routing protocols, and WAN connectivity in addition to having expertise setting up and maintaining Azure infrastructure, especially networking. Many candidates attempt the Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104) certification first, since it provides a natural foundation before tackling AZ-700’s more advanced subject.

It provides access to specialized and senior positions. Beyond the Azure Network Engineer title itself, professions like Cloud Solutions Architect and Cloud Operations Engineer, where network design choices have a significant impact on business, directly benefit from AZ-700 knowledge. 

It is vendor-relevant and up to date. AZ-700 is intimately connected to Microsoft’s developing platform, which includes services like Virtual WAN, Azure Route Server, and Firewall Manager, in contrast to general networking certifications that remain mostly theoretical. If you pass it, you have a better understanding of how Azure networking functions now than it did five years ago. 

How to Prepare

  1. First, solidify the foundations of Azure. The material in AZ-700 will be much easier to understand if you have taken AZ-104 (Azure Administrator Associate) or a similar practical experience.
  2. Experience hybrid connectivity and virtual networks firsthand. You should set up ExpressRoute and VPN gateways yourself in a sandbox setting because reading about them only goes so far.
  3. Examine Microsoft’s best practices and official documents. Instead of focusing only on what is technically feasible, the exam places a strong emphasis on “the right way” to create solutions.
  4. Because security and application delivery services have a large exam weight and are easy to underprepare for, practice with labs covering these topics.
  5. Before the test, use practice tests to find your weak points. 

Final Thoughts

The need for engineers who can create networks that are safe, connected, and built to scale—rather than just functional—is expanding along with the use of Azure. The AZ-700 certification is the proof that you are one of them, and for anyone who is serious about a career in Azure networking, it is rapidly evolving from a nice-to-have to a standard requirement.
